Cofresi D. Roberts

"Dark Reaver" Cofresi D. Roberts is an adventurer, treasure hunter and pirate, and the Captain of the Cofresi Pirates.[6]. While not caring for the title of “Pirate King”, Roberts desires to acquire the “One Piece”, in order to fulfill the dream of the woman who saved his life, Molly.[7]

Roberts is a former apprentice of the Holiday Pirates, which whom he sailed ever since he was a child.[8] After sailing with a powerful veteran crew for nearly a decade, Roberts acquired vast amounts of experience in the seas, allowing him to outhink and outmaneuver even more notorious pirates throughout his pirate career.[9]

Often striking unease to others due to his appearance and powers, Roberts first rejoined his sworn brother Trent in East Blue, which officially commenced their journey as they sail back towards the New World, in search of the power to accomplish their goals. Roberts's ever-growing army of loyal warriors quickly began to cause worry for the World Government.[10]

His boldness, cunning and luck has allowed him to survive conflicts, albeit at great costs, against two members of the current Yonko before their ascencion, as he actively desires to kill a third one, Rena Argo, for being the primary cause of Molly's death.

During the last months of the year 1580, Roberts resurged with a bigger and formidable crew and an enormous army of Reborn, and seemingly on a whim, sought to conquer Alabasta and oppose Yagami Valor and most of the other members of the Generation of Miracles.

Shortly after, his reckless behavior resulted in the loss of a great part of his forces, as he was also faced with near death once again. Scarred, broken and having undergone a transcendent experience made him seemingly abandon his crew as he searches for the true meaning of his own life.

His bounty as of 1580 is Beli366,664,000.

Appearance[]

Roberts is an average-sized young man with pale skin.[11] He sports an athletic, strong and toned build, and a defined facial structure. His clothing varies constantly, but usually wears a high collared, purple robe with no shirt underneath, blue pants and boots. He sometimes wears either a red or black captain's coat over his shoulders.[12] He wears a utility pouch held by his belt, alongside his special dagger which he wears on opposite sides. He has cold, pale white skin and silver hair. However, his most prominent feature is the black sclera of his eyes.[13]

He is often described as being "ghoulish" in appearance,[14]and his presence has been stated to cause unease to those who encounter him.[15][16]

Personality[]

Roberts is a young man with a boisterous, cunning and hard to read personality, which may sometimes come as arrogant to some.[17] He likes drinking, discovering new things and people, and just having a great time.[18] He seems to have a penchant on making bets and engaging in competitions[19] , and more often than not likes to play pranks on his crew mates and is seemingly oblivious of his selfish tendencies.[20] He is blunt to the point it can irritate others, which most often happens, and he will react honestly at things that surprise him or that he didn't expect.[21] While a bit headstrong and impulsive, Roberts is actually extremely cunning and can see through lies and deception, showing a more crude side to him, which enables him to adapt to unforseen scenarios with extreme efficiency, albeit after visibly and comically freaking out at times.

Despite the impression he gives, Roberts can be portrayed as quite serious to those other than his crewmates, which often comes as a surprise whenever he does so. His skills in combat, his experience as a sailor and his leadership are things that others don't seem to associate him with after witnessing how he carries himself normally.[22]

He seems to understand the harshness of the seas, and how unfair the world is, usually speaking from a point of experience. He doesn't believe himself to be a savior to anyone, but will treat his crew mates as family and go to great lengths for their benefit. This in turn may open up a darker side of him whenever a crew member is threatened or injured. Even amidst his rage, Roberts will maintain a level-headed attitude and rarely will he succumb to his emotions.

However, there seems to be an even more ominous and sinister side to him. Roberts believes that anyone that comes across his path and interferes with his goals is deserving of severe punishment, but not by death, as death would relieve the suffering far too quickly. Revealing the nature of his "punishment" towards those who go against him, Roberts's uses the powerful abilities of his Devil Fruit to condemn his adversaries to a life in darkness and without a reflection.[23] He is not beyond offering help to others, yet at the cost of a "sacrifice".[24]

His ability to quickly deduce and take control over a situation is quite impressive, seeing how he was quickly able to escape from imprisonment once he decided to, and even figured out a way to counter powers and abilities he had never come across with after seeing them in action for merely a few seconds.[25] However, his boastful nature becomes evident whenever he warns those who come across him with the intent to interfere with his plans, often declaring his superiority and the helplessness his enemies will feel when faced against him and his "curse".

Relationships[]

Molly[]

Molly was a mother-figure that raised Roberts and Trent for a few years, after both kids got lost from their tribes. Even while she was essentially a teenager, she took them as if they were her own sons, as she also did with others, yet she became particularly close with them two. By Roberts's accounts, she was incredibly powerful and taught him how to control his powers better, and to develop his own, unique fighting style. After the woman's untimely death at the hands of a pirate twelve years ago, Roberts swore to carry on her will and her dreams.[26] Thanks to his adoptive brother's inventions, he managed to "save" Molly's consciousness right before her body died, and spent the next twelve years in order to successfully transfer her consciousness into data, making her an artificial intelligence. Now, thanks to this invention, Molly accompanies the crew as an A.I. inside Trent's glasses and Roberts's contact lens.[27]

Holiday Pirates[]

Cain D. Abel[]

Roberts refers to Abel as "uncle Abel", and seemingly has a lot of respect for his former captain. He seems to hold him in high regard and greatly admires his strength and leadership.[28] He also seems to have "inherited" Abel's love for alcohol.

Enkiru Dario[]

While sailing as an apprentice, Dario was in charge of looking over Roberts. The young man sees the commander of the Holiday as a father figure, and Roberts credits him for developing into a capable combatant and sailor.[28]

Almasy D. Marie[]

Before creating his crew, as he traveled towards the start of the Grand Line, Roberts happened upon Almasy D. Marie, who was in a similar situation as him, stuck in Water 7 because of the impending Aqua Laguna. The two pirates quickly bond and share stories and personal information about each other, given that they have enough time and feel comfortable with one another. Marie is quite curious about Roberts, everything starting from his unusual appearance to his backstory and abilities, and Roberts seems to share this interest for her. The two chat for a while, until Roberts declares a competition, to see which of their Devil Fruits can cause the most panic among citizens, and dares Marie to a bet as well, to join his crew if he wins the competition.[29]

Cofresi Pirates[]

Trent[]

Trent is Roberts's best friend and adoptive brother. They were raised together after Molly rescued them as children. Being from rival tribes, Roberts and Trent had an innate desire to destroy one another, yet these feelings were overcome as they spent more time together and developed as adopted siblings. After reuniting nearly a decade later, Roberts and Trent demonstrated that their bond hadn't waned in the slightest, quickly engaging in conversation and preparing for the plan they had concocted years ago. As a duo, they often engage in random bets and challenges, and Roberts usually asks Trent for unusual gadgets and inventions, yet Trent obliges to his brother's requests. They seem to care and respect one another, and make an incredibly dangerous pair to come across against.

Silver John[]

John is one of the people he encounters right after his meeting with Marie, and seemingly both make a bet, which ends up in John joining Roberts's crew. Out of the members, John is seen almost always nearby Roberts, and is the first one to scold his captain for his antics.[30]

Sela[]

Sela is the crew member who Roberts seems to butt heads the most, but is also the one who probably knows his personality the best, even if it's just to mess with him. They met after Roberts caused havoc in an island where Sela and her former crew were staying in. She was quickly enraged by Roberts and attempted to take him out, sending her men and then getting her own hands dirty, to no avail. Roberts displayed incredible skill and defeated Sela and her crew without actually harming any of them, and while being completely drunk. After which, Roberts reveals he was a member of the Holiday Pirates, a fact he prefers to keep hidden. This, coupled by the display of skill she witnessed, made her excited at the thought of joining Roberts, as she saw him as a way to become infamous and achiever her goals. They're often exchanging insults and pranking each other, but when things really matter, Roberts trusts Sela wholeheartedly the same way she trusts his capabilities as a fighter and leader, although none will state it out loud.[31]

Powers and Abilities[]

As the captain of the Cofresi Pirates, Roberts has command over the crew. He was capable enough of subjugating the Sela Pirates, with nothing but displays of skill and strength.[32] He was also a member of the powerful and infamous Holiday Pirates, serving for around a decade, as an apprentice and one of the crew's "Celebrations", before embarking on his own. As Enkiru Dario' subordinate and protege, Roberts was personally trained by one of the strongest members of the Holiday pirates, and an infamous pirate in general, as such, Roberts has grown to possess incredible strength even at such a young age.[33]

As a yurei, Roberts’s body produces extreme coldness, which he can focus to create cold mist and ice. Being in focus with his breath, Roberts can create streams of cold air from his body, and even go as far as creating ice constructs in mere moments with impressive precision.[34]

He is an extremely observant individual who can analyze and determine solutions against an opponent’s ability during battle.[35] He is cunning and manipulative, and more often than not relies on tactics and outsmarting others over using raw power to overcome challenges and obstacles.

Physical Prowess[]

While not his preferred method of fighting, Roberts can engage in physical combat, showing great levels of raw strength and speed. He was able to release a slight shockwave after clashing with Michael's enlarged and hardened fist, and is able to quickly cross large distances by leaping or dashing at great speeds[36] Even while drunk, he was able to dispatch three of Sela's strongest crew members effortlessly, knocking the men unconscious with single strikes. During the short match against Sela, Roberts was able to escape her "Sprette Slott" technique, which made the entire bar incredibly bouncy, soft and difficult to keep one's balance, by leaping and dashing forward at incredible speeds, landing meters away into the streets, leaving merely a blur on his path.[37] When combining his powers to create a large fist of ice and shadows, Roberts was capable of knocking unconscious a fishman/frogfolk hybrid with a single strike.[38]

Roberts often strikes with swift and pinpointed attacks, aimed to end battles quickly by targeting pressure points and/or vital areas.

Fighting Style[]

Breath of Life (命の息 (めいのいき) Mei no Iki?): The core of Roberts's fighting style. Thanks to the yurei's ability to focus and use their breath and cold body temperature in unusual ways, Roberts took advantage of their innate abilities and his tribe's focus on this aspect, in order to enhance his fighting style. Roberts is able to draw in oxygen and direct it as he desires within his body. With this, he's able to enhance or slow down his metabolism, increase his physical strength and his recovery ability. By understanding and controlling the flow of his breath, Roberts can perform a myriad of feats that enables him to clash head to head with users of superhuman martial arts and Devil Fruit users.

This also has allowed great control over his innate ability to exude coldness and produce ice. He is able to slightly affect the way his coldness releases from his body, granting him the skill of molding the ice into various forms ranging from weapons, body shields and more. He can release powerful streams of ice that freezes his surroundings, and thanks to his control over his breath, he can regulate his body temperature constantly during battle, in order to prevent exhaustion.[39]

Lunam Umbra[]

Main article: Kage Kage no Mi/Lunam Umbra

Roberts newly developed and unique fighting style, created in order to fully utilize the powers of his devil fruit in combination with his Yurei physiology. He seems to have great proficiency using the fighting style, to the point it seems as if he wields two devil fruits at the same time.[40] Roberts is able to use his ability to mold and control his shadow to create even more precise constructs of ice. Roberts merges his ice and shadow to create even more durable and stronger armor, limbs or weapons.[41]

Devil Fruit[]

Main article: Kage Kage no Mi

Roberts ate the Kage Kage no Mi, A Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that grants the user the ability to control shadows, making the user a Ruler of Shadows (影の支配者 Kage no Shihaisha?).[42] He acquired the fruit after searching for its previous user, though it is unclear if he personally killed her or he found the fruit itself. He actively searched for the fruit, and in a short time, he acquired incredible control over his new power. Using a similar philosophy as his fighting style, Roberts managed to understand and develop countless techniques and usages for his Devil Fruit, going so far as to refer and treat his "Doppleman" as his partner, declaring that fighting against him is never going to be a one versus one battle.

Roberts is dangerous when using his devil fruit power, creating tendrils and bladed weapons out of his own shadow. He can telepathically command his doppleman, offering great versatility and a constant element of surprise towards his enemies. He can extend his shadow to cover a large surface area, produce dozens of sharp tendrils, drills, morph it into shadow-like creatures such as crows, shadow wraiths, insects and hounds, and even have it enlarge to such a size its shadowy arm doubles the size of a regular person, all this without requiring him to even lift a single finger.[43] Furthermore when combined with his natural Yurei abilities, he is able to confuse enemies into thinking he possesses two Devil Fruits, due to the largely unknown and secluded nature of the Yurei Tribe. He is able to not only mix both powers together, but to take advantage of each's strengths. He can immobilize enemies with shadow or ice, overwhelming them with his coldness as his shadows attack at the same time with incredible synchronization.

The Kage Kage no Mi also offers Roberts the extremely powerful ability of ripping out and stealing the shadows of others, and being able to use his doppleman shadow to invade the shadow of other people and things. After a shadow is ripped from someone, said victim will fall into a coma for two straight days, or until they are forcibly awoken. This grants Roberts the ability to instantly end a battle should he rip someone's shadow, which he usually takes advantage of thanks to his freezing ice and his ability to take over the shadow's themselves, causing those that he goes against to remain helpless and under his mercy.[40] By invading other shadows, Roberts can not only take control of those whose shadow it belongs to, but also reshape and contort the shadow at his whim, which subsequently affects its user. As such, Roberts can destroy someone merely by having his doppleman invade their shadow and contort or break apart their limbs. It applies similarly to the shadows cast by objects, as Roberts is able to affect most of them without the use of force. Those whose shadows have been stolen are unable to walk underneath the sunlight, cannot cast a reflection and will disintegrate if exposed to sunlight. However, this also causes the shadow itself to cease to exist, should the original owner die.

One of the other usages of this fruit is the ability to insert shadows into corpses, granting these undead warriors the skill and personality of the shadow's owner. Not only that, Roberts can also give shadows and insert them into live beings, temporarily enhancing them, though it puts a great strain on the body, and most individuals can handle merely a handful. However, being the master of shadows, Roberts himself can handle dozens upon dozens of shadows being inserted unto himself, exponentially boosting his physical power and skills. Once he declares his authority towards a stolen shadow, all will eventually succumb to Roberts's commands and offer their master their unwavering loyalty. Even if a zombie warrior is defeated, or even Roberts himself falls unconscious, a stolen shadow will not return to their owner unless the corpse has been "purified" by sea-salt or sea-water. Even the death of the Master of Shadows will not cause for the stolen shadows to return to their owners.

Haki[]

As a Yurei, Roberts grew up with knowledge of the concept of Haki, referred to by his tribe as Rei meaning "Soul" or "Breath". Having such control over his breath and spirit, Roberts has shown that he can also "shut off" his aura from others's senses, allowing him to move about unnoticed and kee his intentions hidden from the mind's eye of his enemies.

Kenbunshoku Haki[]

Roberts has constantly demonstrated his mastery over Zenjin Rei (全人気, Zenjin Rei?, lit. "All's Breath") using it in many instances to locate the "breath" of his surroundings and track the presence and intentions of others. Even with his great and even passive usage of Kenbunshoku, Roberts has shown diligence in continuing to develop this skill, having instructed several of his zombie warriors to launch letha surprise attacks whenever they want, as a way to constantly keep his senses alert.[44]

Busoshoku Haki[]

Roberts has shown knowledge over the concept of Ichijin Rei (一人気, Ichijin Rei?, lit. "One's Own Breath") or Busoshoku Haki, but has yet to ever showcase its usage during his battles.

Emission[]

Haoshoku Haki[]

Having awoken the rare Mujin Rei (無人気, Mujin Rei?, lit. "No One's Breath") or Haoshoku Haki during his traumatic experience at the Batte of the Triad, he acquired control over the years and could exert or supress his spirit at will. Even when meeting other "conquerors", Roberts retains his own kingly presence supressed, a fact he even hid for his crew until his clash against Maurier Harlan.

Roberts's Haoshoku Haki expresses itself as a controlled, yet unrelenting force of nature. The pressure of his presence freezes the spirit of those that lack the willpower to resist it.
