Dials are strange, mysterious devices made from the remains of particular shellfish, which have the ability to store energy and matter. The shellfish remains are gathered from the shallows near the shore of the White-White Sea.[1] Though they originate from Skypiea, some of them can reach and be used in the lower seas.[2]
There are many different varieties of Dials, each one with a specific purpose. Certain types are rare than others, but Dials as a whole are known to be quite common in Sky Islands. Regardless, individuals from the Blue Sea can get a hold of them, either by traveling the White Sea themselves and acquiring them or trading with people that have been to Sky Islands before.
They vary in size and appearance, the general look of a sea or conch shell is common among them. Dials are capable of storing energy, and even different forms of matter, specific to the variety of Dial being used. They are generally limited to only being able to absorb one time of energy or matter. Their absorption abilities are so formidable that, no matter how much of a particular type of energy is thrown at it, a Dial will be able to absorb it. The Dial can then discharge its contents at any time by pressing the apex on the other side of the Dial.
As long as a Dial is not damaged or destroyed, it can hold in its contents indefinitely. Some Dials release their charge all in one burst, while others can release it gradually or otherwise in multiple bursts, before the Dial in question needs to be refilled.
Sky Warfare[]
Dials are the primary weapons used on Sky Islands, often being combined with normal weapons or objects to increase their power or grant them an additional, supplemental ability. This creates incredibly powerful weapons and combat styles. Some Dials can even be hidden underneath clothing to allow for sneak attacks. Individuals unfamiliar with Dials, such as those from the Blue Sea, will often confuse the power of Dials with an innate ability of the Dials' user.
Dial Types[]
All Dial[]
The All Dial (絶神貝,Ōru Daiaru?, literally meaning "Absolute God Shell") is a unique type of Dial created by Bryant D. Kobe.
Axe Dial[]
The Axe Dial (斬撃貝,Akkusu Daiaru?, literally translated as "Slicing Attack Shell") is a standard, offensive Dial. It is known to be uncommon on the Sky Island Skypiea. Upon being used it discharges a thin attack of air in an X-shape, delivering a slash strong enough to cut through iron.
Ball Dial[]
The Ball Dial (気泡貝,Bōru Daiaru?, literally meaning "Air Bubble Shell") is capable of creating air clouds in the shape of a sphere or ball. They can be used for a variety of purposes, including transportation and even the addition of explosives.
Breath Dial[]
The Breath Dial (風貝,Buresu Daiaru?, literally translated as "Wind Shell") is capable of storing air currents. These types of dials are generally used for transportation, increasing the movement speed of different vehicles by attaching multiple Dials, or one Dial of a large enough size, to them. These Dials are especially useful in the event that there is no wind to propel ships with.
Breath Dials are also capable of carrying certain smells or aromas, as well as other gases, poisons, bad scents, or flammable gases.
Cold Dial[]
The Cold Dial ((寒貝,Kūru Daiyaru?, literally meaning "Cold Shell")) is capable of sucking in any type of gas, making it cold and then pushing it back out to make the room much colder. This Dial is extremely effective in making the room extremely cold.[3]
Eisen Dial[]
The Eisen Dial (鉄貝,Aizen Daiaru?, literally meaning "Iron Shell") is an incredibly rare Dial, known to be quite formidable due to its great offensive and defensive properties. It is capable of emitting a stream of "iron cloud" and forming a variety of shapes, yet, despite its malleability, the material itself is as hard as iron. It appears as though there is no limit to how much an Eisen Dial can lengthen or expand its material.
Flame Dial[]
The Flame Dial (炎貝,Fureimu Daiaru?, literally translated as "Blaze Shell") is capable of storing and releasing fire. Outside of just being used to light fires or produce heat, it can be used in combat by producing a powerful column of flames. This Dial is not to be confused with the Heat Dial, which has somewhat similar use and abilities.
Flash Dial[]
The Flash Dial (閃光貝,Furasshu Daiaru?, literally translated as "Flash Shell") is capable of storing and releasing light, doing the latter in a brilliant flash (hence the name). Said flash, while brief, is quite intense, and capable of blinding those that look directly at it, either temporarily or permanently, as if they had been hit by a flash bang.
Flavor Dial[]
The Flavor Dial (匂貝,Fureibā Daiaru?, literally translated as "Flavor Shell") is capable of storing and releasing various aromas, similarly to the Breath Dial. This Dial can also store different types of gases, including flammable gases.
Heat Dial[]
The Heat Dial (熱貝,Hīto Daiaru?, literally translated as "Heat Shell") stores and releases high thermal energy. While often used in ovens or as a heater, the Heat Dial can also be added to weapons to increase their offensive capabilities. This Dial must not be confused with the Flame Dial, which has similar capabilities.
Impact Dial[]
The Impact Dial (衝撃貝,Inpakuto Daiaru?, literally translated as "Impact Shell") is capable of storing and releasing kinetic energy. This can be done through any form of sheer kinetic force, such as punches, sword swings, shockwaves, or even explosions. Once the kinetic energy is released, and if it hits its target, the shockwave generated can cause internal damage onto the user. Said impact has been likened to that of Rokushiki's hidden technique Rokuogan (albeit the Impact Dial is stated to be weaker generally speaking).
Despite its great utility in battle, the Impact Dial has a notable recoil from activation. The recoil often causes great pain, and can even be enough to break the user's arm after repeated use (or whatever body part they were using). However, physically strong enough individuals are capable of mitigating this weakness.
Jet Dial[]
The Jet Dial (噴風貝,Jetto Daiaru?, literally translated as "Wind Jet Shell") is essentially a stronger version of the Breath Dial. While it's incapable of taking in different aromas or gases like the Breath Dial, it makes up for this with its sheer strength. The air is blown out from this Dial at great speed. They can be used to either drastically increase a vehicle's transportation speed in comparison to a Breath Dial, or otherwise be used as a weapon to propel a user's weapon (or even their own body) at blinding speed, drastically increasing their force.
Lamp Dial[]
The Lamp Dial (灯貝,Ranpu Daiaru?, literally translated as "Light Seashell") is similar to the Flash Dial in its ability to store light, but instead of letting it out all at once in a bright flash, it does so gradually, allowing the user to illuminate dark places and function as a light source.
Milky Dial[]
The Milky Dial (雲貝,Mirukī Daiaru?, literally meaning "Cloud Shell") is capable of storing and releasing clouds. These can be used to create pathways in the clouds for transportation. Due to the difference in atmosphere and pressure, Milky Dials cannot normally be used on the Blue Sea.
Reject Dial[]
The Reject Dial (排撃貝,Rijekuto Daiaru?, literally meaning "Rejection Shell") is a much rarer and much more powerful version of the Impact Dial. It has all the general uses and facets of the Impact Dial, but when being used the kinetic energy released is ten times that of the equivalent energy used from an Impact Dial. As a result, the recoil is much greater as well. It is even common for individuals that use a Reject Dial to die upon using it. Exceptionally powerful individuals are capable of using it multiple times in a single day, but even in those cases the user is shown to be put under a great deal of stress and pain from the recoil.
Sound Dial[]
The Sound Dial is a variation of the Tone Dial. Unlike with the Tone Dial, it is capable of holding any amount of sound, including volume, tone, and amplitude. Essentially, whatever sound is captured in the Sound Dial will come out identical to the sound initially placed inside of it. The sound being absorbed will often be inaudible to those nearby, regardless of how loud it actually is.
Stahl Dial[]
The Stahl Dial is an even rarer and stronger variant of the Eisen Dial. It produces black, Steel Clouds, notable for their greater hardness in comparison to Iron Cloud (obviously comparable to steel), while still possessing the Eisen Dial's malleability.
Thunder Dial[]
The Thunder Dial (雷貝,Sandā Daiaru?, literally translated as "Lightning Seashell") is used for storing and releasing electricity.
Tone Dial[]
The Tone Dial (音貝,Tōn Daiaru?, literally translated as "Sound Shell"), abbreviated to TD on the Blue Sea, is able to record and replay sounds spoken into it, essentially functioning as an audio recorder. It is possible for Tone Dials to record music as well, and be distributed by musicians as a sort of CD.
Vision Dial[]
The Vision Dial (映像貝,Bijon Daiaru?, literally translated as "Image Seashell") is capable of capturing images and plying them back, functioning similarly to a camera. This makes them exceptionally useful for gathering video evidence or, more recreationally, filming movies.
Water Dial[]
The Water Dial (水貝,Wōtā Daiaru?, literally translated as "Water Seashell") is capable of storing and releasing vast quantities of water. Said water can be expelled in large enough quantities, along with other equally as powerful Dials, to extinguish a forest fire.[4]
Dial-Based Technology[]
Weapons[]
Dials can be installed into weapons, making them more powerful and versatile. Weapons that are known to have such installations are as follows:
Earth Wind & Fire: Joplin Joan's guitar, which also possesses various Dials implanted into it for multiple offensive properties. Most notably are the Inferno Dials stored within.
Stahlwart: Cassius' suit of armor implements Stahl Dials to create a malleable offensive and defensive tool, as well as Jet Dials to increase his movement and attack speed, as well as allowing for flight.
Four Elements: Cassius' battle axe implements four different types of Dials, each one corresponding to one of the classical elements, in order to increase the power of the blade while also defending against the aforementioned elements.
Spermaceti: Umiyuri's long-range weapons, enhanced with Jet and Sound Dials.
Thunder Jammer: The Beast Brigade's communication jammers, which also serve to trap enemy vessels, enhanced with Thunder Dials.
Transportation[]
Breath Dials and Jet Dials can be installed into vehicles for transportation purposes. Known vehicles include:
