One Piece Role-Play Wiki

Haki (覇気, Haki?, lit. "Ambition") is a term used to describe the mysterious power that allows the user to utilize their own spiritual energy for various purposes.

It can be used to sense people's spiritual energy and predict their actions, give the user a protective coating of spiritual energy, and, for a certain group of "chosen ones", overpowered the willpower of others.[1]

All living beings in the world are capable of learning Haki, being the manifestation of their will. However, most people do not notice or fail to awaken it, causing it to be hidden from the general populace.

Haki is a power that lies dormant in all the world's creatures, but it's rare for most individuals to ever awaken that ability.[1] It is possible for a person to awaken their Haki through intense training or extreme shock. There have been rare instances of a person being born with the ability awakened, with no known training.

Due to the fact that Haki originates from an individual's spirit and not their physical body, users are still capable of using it even if their spirit is transferred into another body. Haki can also become stronger, especially when a Haki user battles stronger opponents.

Despite their great capabilities, Haki is not limitless as it can be depleted from overuse, rendering the user unable to use it for a set period while it regenerates.

Types of Haki

Haki is separated into three categories, or "types" (色, shoku?). Generally, people tend to specialize in a single type of Haki. However, it is possible to improve on different types over the course of time. The three types of Haki are:

  • Kenbunshoku Haki, which grants users a sixth sense of the world around them and limited precognitive abilities.[1] Users of this Haki can sense people's presence, strength, emotions, and intentions.
    • An advanced level of Kenbunshoku allows the user to see a short period into the future.
  • Busoshoku Haki, which allows the user to use their own spiritual energy as armor to defend against attacks, as well as make their own attacks more potent.[1] A person can apply the armament to a section of their body, over their entire body, and even apply it to their weapons.[1]
    • An advanced level of Busoshoku allows the user to emit the armament a short distance without a medium.[2]
      • A higher grade of advanced Busoshoku allows the user to make the emitted armament flow into a target's body and destroy it from the inside out.
  • Haoshoku Haki, which grants the user the ability to overpower the will of others.[1] This results in the victims being knocked unconscious or becoming temporarily subservient of the Haki user. Haoshoku is a rare form of Haki that only one in several million people are born with the ability to use.[3]

Haki Development System

Main article: Haki Development System

The Haki Development System (覇気 開発系, Haki Kaihatsukei?) is a codified system developed by Fleet Admiral Kurama, which he implemented into the Marines in order to instruct and educate the soldiers in the finer points of Haki and how to refine their use of it.

It is not a universal system, however, it was created with the aid of several other texts about Haki.

In Culture

At times, Haki has other names, names dependent on one's culture, be them from the location or from the group.

Races & Groups

  • In the case of the Oni, the old members of the tribe refer to Haki as Kishitsu (気質, Kishitsu?, lit. "Temperament").[4]
  • With the Yurei Tribe, their members refer to Haki as Rei (霊, Rei?, lit. "Soul").[5]
    • For Busoshoku, they call it Jibun no Rei (自分の気, Jibun no Rei?, lit. "One's Own Breath").
    • For Kenbunshoku, they call it Tanin no Rei (他の気, Tanin no Rei?, lit. "Other's Breath").
    • For Haoshoku, they call it Dare no Rei (誰一の気, Dare no Rei?, lit. "No One's Breath").
  • The Abyss Tribe sometimes call it Trace (痕跡 (トレース) , Torēsu?, lit. "Vestige").
    • For Busoshoku, they use Trace of Penumbra (半影の痕跡 (トレース・オフゥ・ペナンブラ) , Torēsu ofu Penanbura?).
    • For Kenbunshoku, they use Trace of Antumbra (遥影の痕跡 (トレース・オフゥ・アンタンブラ) , Torēsu ofu Antanbura?).
    • For Haoshoku, they use Trace of Umbra (本影の痕跡 (トレース・オフゥ・アンブラ) , Torēsu ofu Anbura?).
  • Those of the Gnome Tribe use Ymir (気合, Yumiru?, Norse for "Scream").
    • For Busoshoku, they name it Blood of Ymir (ユミルの () , Yumiru no Chi?, lit. "Ymir's Earth").
    • For Kenbunshoku, they name it Eyes of Ymir (ユミルの () , Yumiru no Me?, lit. "Ymir's Moon").
    • For Haoshoku, they name it Breath of Ymir (ユミルの (テン) , Yumiru no Ten?, lit. "Ymir's Universe").

  • For those living at the White Sea, they call it Mantra (心綱, Mantora?, Sanskrit for "Mind Rope"), though, that is mostly in regards to Kenbunshoku.
  • People residing at Wano Country long ago refer to it as Ryuo (流桜, Ryūō?, lit. "Flowing Petal"), which is also often narrowed, but mostly in regards to Busoshoku.

  • Despite the concept behind Haki being universal, the name, as shown above, isn't shared throughout the world.
