Maria Zoraida is a well-established abolitionist hailing from Fish-Man Island, although she now lacks a permanent residence as she travels to various locations across the seas in search of those in need of liberation.[3]
Formerly a resident of Ryugu Kingdom, Zo, as she has come to be known by associates, was captured and sold into slavery at some point in her late teenage years due to great beauty and her status as a descendant of a famous figure in Fish-Man Island history. She was later purchased, becoming the slave of an unknown yet highly prolific pirate crew.[4]
After being liberated by a revolutionary group known as the Soapbox Revolutionaries, Zoraida was inspired to become an abolitionist to fight for the freedom of all enslaved individuals and the end of racial discrimination. Having since parted ways with the Soapbox Revolutionaries for unknown reasons, Zoraida now acts as an independent agent.[5]
